Conservation 20 years ago I first heard about Macaws flying freely in my home country of the Netherlands. I was watching a television show presented by famous Dutch comedian and nature show host Ivo de Wijs. He talked about a 17th century estate in the west of The Netherlands that was recently bought by the national forest service. He pictured the audience a romantic view on the history of the estate with many tropical plants that, like magic, got a foothold in its 17th century landscape.

ATHENS - Greek officials began a hunt to track down some 30 parrots imported from Germany which are believed to be carrying a disease that can be passed on to humans, news reports said Tuesday.

Officials in Pireaus, near Athens, said they were starting to track down the birds after they were suspected of having Chlamydia Psittaci, or parrot fever, the Greek daily Kathimerini reported.

When news of this action, which was evidently planned in secret and funded with public funds without taxpayer input, was exposed in a Connecticut newspaper, a firestorm of public opposition erupted.

General News The poachers arrived around 2:00 AM, travelling on bicycles so that sleeping residents did not hear their stealthy approach. They parked their bikes and the leader climbed up the Con Ed power pole until he was within arms' reach of the wild parrot nest. He threw a net over the nest, captured several terrified parrots, and handed down his quarry to a second man, who stuffed the birds into a carrier. The poachers remounted their bikes, rode a few blocks East, climbed another pole, and repeated their operation. Then the thieves were gone, departing as quietly as they had arrived.

Shelters and Rescue By Naomi Havlen; October 2, 2005

It's a bittersweet farewell this weekend for about 150 of the Roaring Fork Valley's most colorful, feathery residents.

The birds that live at The Gabriel Foundation, a parrot rescue and adoption agency located in Emma, have found a new home in Elizabeth, 35 miles south of Denver. The nonprofit had been taking in abandoned or mistreated parrots in their Eagle County and then Pitkin County locations, and adopting them out to good homes nationwide, but was cited for land-use violations by both counties.
