SAN DIEGO -- Petco Animal Supplies Inc. said Tuesday it will stop selling large birds in a deal with an animal rights group, which agreed to end its boycott.
Amazon and African grey parrots, cockatoos and macaws will no longer be sold at Petco stores.
''We recognize that most of our bird customers are what we would call 'beginning hobbyists.' Large birds are not necessarily appropriate for these individuals due to their long lifespan, size and care requirements,'' Bruce Hall, Petco's president and chief operating officer, said in a statement.
In return, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals agreed to end demonstrations outside Petco stores. AP

Petco has caved in to Peta and agreed to cease the sale of large parrots?
Petco's reasoning is that the large parrots are ill suited to the average bird "owner." True, large parrots do not belong in cages as "pets", nor does any bird, the very notion of a CAGED BIRD should be an appalling statement, one that causes a public outcry. Would we find it acceptable to cage a Blue Jay, Hawk or Pelican? Of course not. So why do we not only find it acceptable to cage a parrot or any other bird, label it as a pet and happily sell it as a retail item in pet stores such as Petco?
The species of parrot which is so often given up by the "owners" is not always the large Parrots, but the smaller parrots which we all know and love; Conures. Their smaller size and brilliant colors are a strong selling point in a pet store. The Petco decision also does not stop the sales of African Greys, Amazons, Caiques, Quakers etc...
Petco has not given in to Peta, it is absurd to believe that. Petco rarely sells large birds in their stores, they have not lost any revenue.
Petco has quite cleverly utilized Peta's PETNO campaign against them to appear as the caring and "humane pet store" by declaring the decision to cease the sales of large parrots.
As one who has been instrumental in the Petno campaign, I find it hypocritical that Peta has allowed this decision.
Is it a step in the right direction? Absolutely, but to praise Petco for allowing the sales of "medium sized" parrots, as well as the other animals they sell is appalling.
Would it be acceptable for a pet store to sell only medium and small breed puppy mill puppies? Parrots also come from horrific breeding mills, just as puppies do.
