Course Prerequisite: One science course having a laboratory component, or permission of instructor. This course is open to all college students or adult learners who register for it through Lesley University This course is open to non-science majors as well, and it can fulfill in part general education natural sciences (or multicultural perspectives) requirement at Lesley. The course requirements differ for majors and non-majors.
Course Description: In this course we will explore firsthand the amazing Amazon ecosystem of Peru and visit local communities in urban and frontier environments. A service project in Iquitos is built into the itinerary. We will take early morning walks and boat rides, night walks, day hikes, and trips to various ecosystem types, where we will see an enormous variety of plant and animal life and explore the ecology of tropical forests in the largest intact example left on Earth. We will be staying at Explorama Lodge and Explornapo Camp in comfortable accommodations with great food and the best guides in the Amazon, and we will also visit the ACEER canopy walkway, which will take us nearly ¼ mile through the treetops. We will visit a Shaman and his medicinal garden, a frontier medical clinic run by Dr. Linnea Smith, and local villages. Pre-trip meetings will occur in either face-to-face or electronic format, or some of both, and will be arranged to fit the schedules of participants. Dr. Morimoto has extensive experience in the Amazon, with a dozen visits. Explorama (www.explorama.com) is the most reputable and dependable Amazon eco-adventure company in the Amazon.
